ABSTRACT

This chapter centres on the work of Anne Jones, the principal of Sanderson Senior High School. Born in Ireland, Anne, the eldest child of three, emigrated to WA with her family at the age of fifteen. Anne had no experience of co-educational secondary schooling in Ireland, where she attended an all-girls, Catholic secondary school run by nuns in Dublin for the first three years of her high school education. A most significant aspect of Anne's life experience was her migration with her family to Perth, Western Australia. Anne spent her first two years teaching in the WA countryside in a small district high school in the wheatbelt. From the time she arrived at the school, Anne undertook a number of innovations in order to improve the quality of curriculum, teaching and learning for the pupils. Anne seized every chance which presented itself to provide opportunities for her teaching staff to take responsibility.
