ABSTRACT

Bluehill Senior High School is a city school located in a low socioeconomic area. What Jason Johns found on arrival at the school was a situation where the social and emotional problems of the pupils were seriously affecting their performance. Overall, the school's turn-around can be attributed to the leadership of its principal, Jason Johns. Jason is a West Australian from a farming background who trained initially as a specialist physical education teacher. When he arrived in 1992 Jason increased the emphasis on the concept and voluntary workshops were held for two hours over twenty weeks for a ‘core’ group. Jason has also encouraged staff to promote subject-specific programmes based on SCL approaches. The most common recurring theme in discussions with Jason on education is that it should be aimed at producing responsible lifelong learners who possess the qualities of trust, respect and honesty.
