ABSTRACT

Adhān (Ar.) The call to prayer. This is made five times a day to the Muslim faithful by the Mu'adhdhin (q.v.). The call consists of seven main parts, with some slight variation in the number of repetitions of each part according to madhhab (q.v.). There are also slight differences between the calls to prayer of the Sunnīs and the Shi'ites. The adhān may be chanted to many different tunes and considerable variations will be heard from city to city and country to country. (See Masjid; Salāt; Shī'ism; Sunnī.) al-'Ādiyāt (Ar.) The title of the 100th sura of the Qur'ān; it means here 'The War Horses' or 'Chargers'. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and contains 11 verses. The title is drawn from the 1st verse which contains an oath 'By the war horses' and which, with the succeeding four verses, evokes the early Arabs' predilection for raiding each other. Man is also reminded that he will be resurrected and judged on the Day of Judgement. (See al-Hisāb.)

'Adn (Ar.) Eden. One of the names used for Paradise in the Qur'ān. See v. 12 of the Sūrat al-Saff (q.v.). (See also al-Janna.)
