ABSTRACT

Bektāshiyya Highly syncretic Turkish sūfi (q.v.) order whose beliefs and practices include elements drawn from Christianity. It is named after the 7th/13th century sūfī Hājjī Bektāsh. The order gained political influence under the Ottomans (q.v.) but was suppressed by Atatürk (q.v.). The main centre of the Bekt­­ shiyya today is in Albania. {See Baba; Dede; Tasawwuf.)
