ABSTRACT

Laylat al-Mi'rāj (Ar.) The Night of the Ascension (of the Prophet Muhammad). A popular festival celebrates this event on the 27th of the Muslim month of Rajab. It is known in some Asian countries and communities as Shab-i Miraj. (See Mi'rāj.)

Laylat al-Qadr (Ar.) The Night of Power (or Decree) which is believed to be the night between the 26th and 27th of Ramadan (q.v.), or the 27th night. The Night has a very special significance in the Muslim calendar because it is the anniversary of that night when the Qur'ān was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. In Sūrat al-Qadr (q.v.), this Night is described as 'better than 1000 months'. Tradition holds that requests made to God during Laylat al-Qadr will be granted.
