Consider phonetically unrealized NPs that are coreferential with their antecedents when they have one (as in (3b)) and are interpreted (roughly) as “for someone” when they do not (as in (3a)). These NPs are in complementary distribution with launching sites of movement rules, as (1) through (7) illustrate.
