Assumptions about the nature of society differ according to whether they depict society (or at a lower level of analysis, organizations) as a cohesive, consensual unity or as a fragmented, conflictual diversity. The former

forms of domination. On this view, society is seen to be inherently unstable, fundamentally problematic and capable of radical transformation rather than as a self-maintaining system of smoothly meshed structures and processes.
