ABSTRACT

Denmark is a small country with a population of 5.3 million covering 44,000 sq. km. The average population density is therefore 124 (Danmarks Statistik [hereinafter DS], 1999: 134). Over 20 per cent of the population lives in Copenhagen, and when taking the surrounding area into consideration, this increases to one-third of the population. This high concentration of population has had a significant effect on retailing in Denmark. The country consists of a peninsular and two major islands as well as a large number of smaller islands. Denmark is surrounded by seas apart from one land-fast border with Germany, which has changed location several times following wars. The shape and configuration of the islands have had a major influence on the way in which retailing has developed over time because of the impact on the transport and distribution of goods.
