ABSTRACT

In Tanzania sport is organised just as hierarchically as it is in many other countries. Administratively, the most important unit is the National Sports Council (BMT), which is directly under the Directorate of Sport in the Ministry1 concerned with sport. At the base of the hierarchical structure is the sports club (see Figure 8.1). There are thirty-two national sports associations in Tanzania, all of which are affiliated to the National Sports Council (Wigum and Leivaag 1983). Only one sports association is for women’s sport alone – netball. Soccer was a male sports association until the late 1990s. Recently, women who play soccer have been struggling in order to be regis-

tered as the Tanzanian Soccer Association for Women (TAWOFA), but not as a separate women’s association. The goal is to become a part of the Tanzanian Soccer Association (FAT) (Massao 2001).
