ABSTRACT

In addition to learning the skills that are appropriate to a particular model of counselling, counsellors need to develop a professional orientation to their work. Professionalism is defined as ‘internalized attitudes, perceptions, and personal commitment to the standards, ideals and identity of a profession’ (Spruill & Benshoff, 1996, p. 468), and for counsellors this means performing certain professional activities that contribute to effective counselling.
