ABSTRACT

In any interpersonal situation (whether group or one-to-one) in which people assume the role of counsellor, those people also assume a responsibility for their own behaviour, their knowledge of themselves, and their ability to relate effectively to others. Anyone who undertakes to be a counsellor must be prepared to interact as a real person with the client and to strive for an awareness of the factors involved in the process. As it is impossible for counsellors to be totally objective and rational, all who endeavour to be so deny themselves a most valuable source of counselling information: their own feelings, perceptions, hunches, and ideas.
