The functional psychoses

In the previous chapter we dealt with the neuroses (or psychoneuroses) which are generally considered to be the minor psychiatric disorders. In this chapter, we will deal with the more severe mental disorders in which ‘no evidence of underlying organic brain dysfunction has been proved to exist… The two main categories here are the affective disorders and schizophrenia; apart from being grouped together to make a neat classification, these illnesses appear to be quite independent of each other.’ (Munro and McCulloch, 1969).
