Mental subnormality (mental handicap)
So far in this book we have been discussing the social problems associated with psychiatric illness. We now turn to a consideration of some of the social problems associated with mental subnormality. Although, as will be seen in Chapter 10, the law classifies mental subnormality under the heading of mental disorder, it is necessary both from a clinical and a social point of view to distinguish the two conditions. Mental illness and mental subnormallty can exist, however, in the same person, as we shall show later.
