ABSTRACT
In the developing (or rather, changing) awareness of the forms of the Australian self-image and particularly its literary manifestations we have reached a very important stage. The problems which are now clearly apparent are characteristically colonial ones. These problems have caused discrepancies between image and experience and discontinuities between culture and context, the range and dimensions of which are now being recognized.
