ABSTRACT

William Bateman and Mary Adams, like the Groomes at Carlton Road (Chapter 3) and James and Louisa Walker (Chapter 6) formed a London School Board headteacher pairing. Reconstructing their daily journey to school from their residence at 10, Willow Road (Plate 14), it may be inferred that they walked down the hill, with an open view of Hampstead Heath on their left, leaving the breakfast things for their two servants to clear away. Past Hampstead Heath station and the tram terminus at South End (Map 3) they would presumably have turned left into Constantine Road, thence into Agincourt Road as far as the school entrance.
