ABSTRACT

Twenty years of export-oriented industrialization has made Malaysia a second tier Newly Industrializing Country (NIC) in Asia; the recently announced development plan ‘Vision 2020’ sets the official target for achieving the status of industrialized nation. During the two decades from 1970 to 1990, the average annual growth in Malaysia’s GDP amounted to 6.7 per cent. In 1992, GDP grew at a rate of 8.5 per cent, a modest decline from the 8.8 per cent in 1991, and the manufacturing sector alone grew by 13 per cent. Manufacturing contributes 29 per cent to total GDP and provides 20 per cent of total employment.
