 3. ‘Regarding that, the mantrin should first transform himself into Vajrapāni and carry out the purification and taking possession of the site which has red-coloured earth. Next he should transform himself into Mahā-vairocana and take up a cord reddened with safflower dye, which has been empowered with the Mantra of the Noble Acala, and mark out the Mandala. It should be triangular, with a gate facing towards the east. It should also be carefully constructed with portals, archways and a border.’ ‘Then taking up fine red pigment, he should place there the blazing letter, (201b) the letter RA which has an anusvāra, resembling the rising sun. It is the most excellent conqueror of those who are very hard to guide. Having brought to mind all the Buddhas, he should fully draw the Mandala, the triangle of which may be five cubits, or else seven or nine in size. In accordance with the mantra attainment it should be divided into three parts. The deities should be arranged as before, The wise one should act as the Lord of the Family, and the other deities should be arranged by the wise one as appropriate.’
