ABSTRACT
While the evolution of energy consumption in Europe from the nineteenth century is relatively well known, information for preceding centuries is, on the other hand, scarce. There is general agreement among scholars about the main sources exploited then. What is lacking is an attempt to quantify their importance. In the following pages we shall try to provide that measurement and to connect the changes in the European energy system to the population increase from the second half of the seventeenth century onwards.
