ABSTRACT

Civic Scientific Literacy and Attitude to Science and Technology In the last half of the 20th century, a growing body of research and literature has focused on public perceptions of science and technology among the adult population of developed and developing countries. In the short history of the field generally known as public understanding of science, its theoretical approach and practical objectives have evolved in response to the widening impact of science and technology on the lives of individuals, organizations, and communities. In the first phase, from the end of World War II through the end of the 1950s, there was widespread public awe and admiration for the work of scientists and engineers in producing a series of miracle drugs, jet aircraft, ever improving communications, and a rising standard of living. With the launch of Sputnik I in 1957 and the advent of the space race, a popular standard for intelligence became the rocket scientist.
