ABSTRACT
Before the mines were nationalized in 1947, employers in the mining industry were usually referred to as ‘coal owners’, although many of them owned little or no coal: rather, they leased the coal which they worked from others. The colloquial name was a survival from the period when coal was usually worked by the person who owned it: the landlord, generally the owner of the soil.
