ABSTRACT

Levels of glucocorticoids are regulated via negative feedback loops at several levels of the axis. In rodents, glucocorticoid feedback sites include the pituitary gland, hypothalamus, hippocampus, and frontal cortex (Diorio, Viau, & Meaney, 1993; Jacobson & Sapolsky, 1991). Increases in glucocorticoids result in inhibition of CRH production from the paraventricular nucleus (Keller-Wood & Dallman, 1984). Low levels of glucocorticoids, produced by adrenalectomy, result in elevated levels of CRH and adrenocorticotrophic hormone (Dallman et al., 1991).
