ABSTRACT

Every creditor tries to recover the money owed to them, and if that fails, where possible, they may attempt to possess the goods involved. Many of the early attempts at recovery are of a non-judicial nature, involving letters, phone calls, visits, all geared towards establishing contact with borrowers and instituting some repayment strategy (Rock, 1973; Doig and Millar, 1981). Some creditors handle this process themselves, others place some or all of this activity in the hands of specialised debt collecting agencies.
