ABSTRACT

Every act by a teacher in a mathematics classroom is a manifestation not only of their perception of mathematics but also of their perception of what is involved in teaching (and by implication also in learning) mathematics. How a teacher behaves in the classroom in a mathematical situation, and the habitual interactions which take place, speak volumes to pupils about mathematics and about the possibilities in it for them.
