ABSTRACT

The authors are in agreement with Bates and were very disappointed that only a very small number of teachers in their survey used the video recorder in any other way than being able to see programmes at suitable times. This chapter argues that effective use of the video recorder could make a very important advance in the use of educational television. However, most teachers can improve their teaching using television providing they consider it to be of importance. Cassettes give teachers and learners greater control, can be used for mastery learning, reflection, analysis, interrogation of evidence and more individual learning. T. M. Williams acknowledged an increase in learning of both central and peripheral matters up to adolescence, but emphasized that there had been very few studies of children under the age of about eight years. Most primary schools will need to rely on local authority resource centres.
