ABSTRACT

This essay is an inquiry into literary ideology and feminist practice. It begins an examination of what I call ‘the apparatus of literary production’, the intersection of art, business, and technology which currently determines literature-both literary works and the disciplines of literature. Looking at the apparatus of literary production resituates the author in the discursive fields producing literature. Interpretation, one form of the consumption of literature, is an element itself within the apparatus. A study of the apparatus of literary production potentially locates our cultural expressions in a global economy of language, technology, and multinational capital.
