ABSTRACT

By November 1992, the European Community (EC) had received full membership applications from three Nordic countries. Indeed, once Sweden had applied for full EC membership on 1 July 1991, Finland and Norway followed in relatively quick succession (Finland in March 1992 and Norway in November 1992). The response from the EC was also comparatively speedy and accession negotiations started in February 1993. The purpose of this chapter will be to analyse the various phases of the accession negotiations. By taking this approach, the chapter will link together the international perceptions of the Nordic countries developed in Part II and the domestic pressures within the individual countries which are addressed in Part III.
