ABSTRACT
Sometimes apparently similar events can produce quite opposite effects. The First World War left the idea of common-European or universal-values in crisis. As described in Essay 2, the war was followed by political efforts towards creating or maintaining ‘Europe’ but, at the deeper emotional and philosophical level, a grave doubt was implanted as to the sustainability of any idea of given, absolute, human or European values, standards or principles.
