ABSTRACT

Although improvements in economic methodology and approaches to include the environment as an integral part of the economic system, and the use of a variety of environmental planning and management techniques may aid environmental conservation, concern over the negative effects of development upon the environment has led to calls for a new conceptual approach to development. This conceptual approach is termed ‘sustainable development’, and at the beginning of the twentyfirst century, it has become the new paradigm for all forms of development, including tourism.
