ABSTRACT

The idea for this collection came out of a series of interdisciplinary seminars held at Birkbeck College, University of London, entitled ‘From miscegenation to hybridity?’. The seminar generated heated debate and drew discussion from a wide spectrum of academics, students and professionals. Their enthusiastic response to what was evidently a controversial topic suggested a need for a more considered analysis of this term and one which located it within specific historical and geographical contexts.
