ABSTRACT
Said has written over fifteen books and over 240 journal articles. Most read in media studies are Orientalism (1978) and Culture and Imperialism (1993). Orientalism analyses the ways in which the Other has helped to define the subject: in this case, the way the Orient defines the West as its contrasting image, idea and experience. In Said’s words: ‘The Orient is an integral part of European material civilization and culture…beyond any correspondence, or lack thereof, with a “real” Orient’.
