ABSTRACT

It is no accident that the Animated Hamlet, with its painting-like images and self-conscious interplay of stasis and motion, is considered the most “artistic” production of the series thus far. This cartoon links the “high-art” form of oil painting to an animation technique which is both labor-intensive and visually reflective of how animation creates motion from immobility. This film in particular displays the fixed, apparently static canonical text being brought to life, but only through radical rewriting and the movement created by film.
