ABSTRACT
Having being approached to provide a contribution for this book I stumbled at the first hurdle, when I commenced writing. When asked to describe myself I would immediately identify myself as a black working-class woman. But what exactly does this mean? I could not define what exactly constituted a ‘black working-class woman’ nor identify myself so strongly with what might be called an essentialist construction.
