ABSTRACT

As a rule, the discussion of employment prospects for migrant labour in the metropolis has been conducted in domestic terms. Most attention has been paid to questions of racial discrimination on the one hand, and labour market segmentation on the other. Conversely, little attention has been devoted to the connections between international migration of labour and international movements of capital. Yet, as suggested in the previous section, changing attitudes towards the recruitment of foreign workers are strongly related to mobility of capital in general and to the operations of multinational corporations (MNCs) in particular.
