ABSTRACT
My determinism book was now being brought into being by Oxford University Press, its advent not underestimated by me in filling in my Author’s Publicity Form. You have indeed heard some grounds of my hope for its future, and my own, but not much of the main ground. I was confident that the book contained a resolution of the problem about determinism most argued about by philosophers in October 1987, as it had been since Hobbes, Hume and Kant in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This is not the problem of formulating a conceptually adequate theory of determinism, which came into view when the philosophy of mind became an industry in the twentieth century. Nor is it the problem of the truth of such a determinism.
