ABSTRACT
The first of the following extracts is from Barbara Cartland’s novel The Naked Battle (1978), which I borrow from Walter Nash’s Language in Popular Fiction (1990), whose extensive survey of ‘women’s’ popular fiction you should compare with my own reading. The second is Fleur Adcock’s poem ‘Against Coupling’ (1971).
