ABSTRACT

When Lorenzo Nuvoletta was finally arrested in December 1990 it was widely believed that he was the leader of the Camorra’s second most powerful gang, second only to the one led by Carmine Alfieri. The rapid rise of Nuvoletta’s gang was largely owing to its intervention in earthquake reconstruction, which involved relaundering money and winning contracts. The well-documented rise of this gang, based around four brothers-Angelo, Ciro, Gaetano and Lorenzo-is an excellent case study in the transformation of an insignificant family from the provinces into multimillionaires.1
