ABSTRACT

The Euston Films series Widows was first shown on British television in spring 1983. Following the success of this first series (six episodes), in which four women successfully carry out a robbery which was planned by their husbands, three of whom died in a similar raid, a follow-up series was made. The two series were then broadcast in the spring of 1985, at 9 p.m. on a Wednesday evening. The first series had been successful and cultish. The second series had more problems, which I discuss below, but still the June 1985 issue of Spare Rib enthused:

What is it about Widows that had us abandoning half-made cups of coffee in the kitchen at the sound of the…theme music? Not just a female version of The Sweeney-Widows was brilliantly scripted, dazzlingly performed and had a great plot.
