The most important effects of alcohol on the gut are the predisposition to cancer of the oesophagus and the precipitation of acute and chronic pancreatitis, which may cause intermittent or protracted pain, together with endocrine and exocrine failure. Less dangerous but disabling are the nausea and retching due to alcoholic gastritis.
