CHILDREN, ADOLESCENTS, AND THE FAMILY

Ingestion of alcohol by pregnant women can permanently damage the fetus, leading to abnormal facial features, abnormal growth, and mental retardation. Infants accidentally poisoning themselves and schoolchildren experimenting with alcohol are not infrequently admitted to hospital and occasionally are left permanently braindamaged as a result of long-lasting, very low blood sugar levels, low body temperature, or lack of oxygen, all induced by alcohol. As expected, children of parents who abuse alcohol experience more than their fair share of problems.
