ABSTRACT
This is not the first time that the Royal College of Physicians has felt it necessary to draw public attention to the harm caused by the immoderate use of alcohol. In 1726 it made a submission to the House of Commons on ‘a great and growing evil’ later to be compellingly portrayed by Hogarth in his engraving of Gin Lane.
