ABSTRACT
A glance at a map shows Basilicata (still widely known by its historical name Lucania) to be a transitional zone. On the one hand it links Puglia (especially south of the Ofanto) with the Tyrrhenian; on the other it forms a kind of funnel leading from southern Italy into Calabria and hence into Sicily.
