ABSTRACT
Communicating may indeed be fundamental to our social existence – but that still leaves the questions raised at the outset. How is it that we can reach out to others beyond ourselves? And what resources are available to humans – and other animals too – for managing this remarkable feat of actively interconnecting one with another?
