With the whole class, establish who has heard of Mandela and of South Africa. Explain the key features of apartheid, with a globe to hand to show the location of South Africa. If possible have a video clip or photographs of Mandela to show the class. Explain how democracy is developing in South Africa and that international pressure groups are assisting that process.
