ABSTRACT

Organise children in groups. Give out a large sheet of paper to each table and place a photograph in the centre of each sheet. Explain to the children that they must look at the photograph closely and write clearly in the space around the photograph any questions they would like to ask and any statements they know ‘for sure’ about the photographs. After five minutes pass the sheet and photograph to the next table, with that table passing theirs on so that all photographs and sheets are moved round in a clockwise direction. When a group receives a photograph and sheet, they should look at what the previous group has written and see if they can answer any of their questions and then add some statements and questions of their own. This process continues until all children have seen all five or six photographs and the photographs are back with the original groups. Then give out the information about the photographs or about the locality in general. It is important that each group, having digested the information, shares this with the rest of the class so that they all learn about the activities or people in the specific photograph. The plenary should focus on what they have learnt from each other, what misconceptions they had and what more they would like to know.
