Determiners can be conceived as predicates of sets (see Larson and Segal 1995: Chapter 8). Thus a quantifier like all or some in (1) can be thought of as a relation between the set of whales and the set of mammals, as shown below, where B {x | xa whale} and A {x | xa mammal}.
