ABSTRACT
The preceding chapters dealing with the period following the Norman Conquest have attempted to narrate the chief developments in the monarchy and government. Important as these matters are, they do not in themselves form a full history of the Middle Ages in Britain. It is essential to discuss medieval society, in order to obtain some picture of the lives of ordinary men and women who lived during the years between 1066 and 1485.
