ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with children with special educational needs (SEN) who need additional help at school but who are also at increased risk of developing mental health problems. The term SEN encompasses children with a wide range of difficulties including dyslexia, visual impairment, hearing impairment, learning difficulties, physical disabilities and communication difficulties. It also includes children with autism and Asperger’s syndrome as well as those with emotional and behavioural difficulties, such as ADHD, which are discussed in other chapters.
