ABSTRACT

The above extracts foreground for us fundamental questions which must be addressed in thinking about our daily practice of commenting

on student writing: what is good feedback? And how can we communicate our comments in ways which are meaningful to students? This chapter aims to explore these questions by focusing on:

• current institutional demands for feedback and insights from research • the purposes and focus of feedback • commentary on students’ texts • ways of communicating feedback to students • the development of ‘feedback dialogues’.
