ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the relationship between the values inherent in the coach’s practice and their social significance in terms of the extent to which the practice is considered appropriate and acceptable. Coaching practice can be subjected to social evaluation and sanction. The judgements range from those behaviours that are illegal to those that are morally unacceptable or offend more contextualised ethical practice. Once again, it will be suggested that a greater insight into the issues will be afforded by appreciating the conceptual issues involved. Although there has been a good deal written about appropriate and inappropriate coaching behaviour, there has been little or no analysis in relation to the conceptual framework surrounding the coaching process. The treatment has been issues-led: for example, child abuse, doping, or inequitable behaviour to athletes.
