ABSTRACT

In the previous two chapters we focused on, first, the development of stigma as an academic topic which, by necessity, involved highlighting the various scientific disciplines that have traditionally addressed the issues of exclusion as central tenets of their paradigms. From sociology and social psychology to media studies and anthropology, many academic strands of study have been employed to develop our understanding of the social and psychological forces that contribute to the marginalisation of individuals and groups from various communities.
